Spoor (mobile application)

This section applies to Spoor, the offline 4x4 trail recording application published by Online Centre on Google Play (package identifier za.co.onlinecentre.spoor). Where anything in this section differs from the rest of this notice, this section governs Spoor.

Location data

What Spoor accesses. Spoor accesses your device's precise location, from GPS and from network-based location services. It does this while you are using the app, and also in the background, while the screen is off, or while the app is not in the foreground, but only for as long as a recording is actually running.

Why Spoor needs it. Recording the route you drive is the purpose of the app. Spoor uses your location to:

  • record the track of a trail as a series of GPS fixes, with the time, elevation, speed and heading reported by the device for each one;
  • attach a position to any waypoint you mark, such as a gate, a water crossing or a hazard;
  • show where you are on the map, and centre the map on you;
  • calculate the distance, duration, moving time, climb and maximum speed shown for a recorded trail.

Why it runs in the background. A trail is driven with the phone in a pocket, on a cradle with the screen off, or with another app open. If Spoor only had access while it was on screen, the recording would have gaps or stop altogether. Background access exists so that a recording you started continues until you stop it.

Where your location is stored, and where it is not sent. Everything Spoor records is written to a database on your own device. Your recorded tracks, waypoints and the location data they contain are never transmitted to Online Centre, and are never transmitted to anyone else. They are not uploaded, backed up to a server, or synchronised. Spoor has no user accounts, no login, and no server that stores your data.

Your recorded data leaves your device only when you choose to send it: Spoor can export a trail as a GPX or KML file, and you then decide what to do with that file through your device's own sharing options. Where it goes at that point is determined by you and by whichever app or service you send it to.

Map data

Spoor is designed to work with no reception, and does so by downloading map areas in advance and storing them on your device.

To draw the map, and to download a map area for offline use, the app requests map tiles from a map server operated by Online Centre at kaart.onlinecentre.co.za. Like any request to any web server, these requests carry your device's IP address, and the tiles requested indicate the part of the map being displayed or downloaded, which is an approximate indication of the area you are looking at, not a record of where you have driven. Server logs of these requests are retained only for the operation and security of the server, and are not linked to you, to any account, or to your recorded trails.

No map request is made while the app is drawing a map area you have already downloaded. This is the only network connection Spoor makes for any purpose.

Other permissions Spoor requests

  • Notifications,  to display the ongoing notification that Android requires while a recording is in progress. The notification is what stops the system ending the recording.
  • Files you choose, when you import a route, Spoor reads only the single GPX or KML file you select in the file picker. It does not browse, scan or read anything else on your device.
  • Battery optimisation exemption, optional, and offered because Android's power saving will otherwise stop a long recording. You can decline it.
  • Run at start-up and keep the device awake, used only to keep an active recording running reliably.

What Spoor does not do

Spoor contains no advertising, no analytics, no crash or usage reporting, and no third-party tracking libraries of any kind. It does not collect your name, email address, phone number, contacts, or any device identifier. It does not build a profile of you, and it has nothing to sell to anyone. Online Centre cannot see your trails.

Retention and deletion

Your recorded trails, waypoints and downloaded map areas remain on your device until you delete them. You can delete an individual trail, waypoint or downloaded map area inside the app at any time.

Because this data is held only on your device and nowhere else, uninstalling Spoor, or clearing its data in Android's app settings, permanently deletes all of it. There is no copy held by Online Centre to request the deletion of. You can also withdraw any permission, including location, at any time in Android's settings.

Security

Your data is protected by the security of your own device: Spoor's database is held in the app's private storage, which Android does not make readable to other apps. Requests to the map server are encrypted in transit using HTTPS. Since your recorded location data never leaves your device, it is not exposed to interception in transit or to a breach of any server.
